Swedish bank Nordea has gone through the biggest internet fraud in history after more than eight million Swedish kronor (i.e. around £580,000) vanished as a result of tailor-made Trojans launched by Russian criminals who used keylogging software to do this. Security company McAfee is describing the robbery as the “biggest ever” online bank heist.
The customers of Nordea have been continuously targeted by emails containing a tailormade Trojan over the last 15 months and around 250 customers have been hit by this fraud. The offenders encouraged clients to download a “spam fighting” application called raking.zip or raking.exe that was infected by the Trojan, according to McAfee. 121 people are alleged of being involved in this robbery.
But, the good news for the affected customers is that bank is refunding everyone who lost money even if they hadn’t taken safety measures. Anyway, the police investigation is on the move and the bank is currently evaluating its security measures.
